• Endorsed by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association Executive Board of Directors, December, 2005
The following information will provide you with details on the event.
Purpose / Objective of Combine
1. Provide a venue where the best junior baseball players are selected to play in a combine.
2. Provide a venue where athletes are exposed to dozens of collegiate and professional scouts.
3. Provide an exciting atmosphere where Wisconsin’s best talent can compete with each other in an organized format.
4. Obtain the endorsement of the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association to help Showtime Sports promote the event and assist promoting how players can tryout for the combine through conference representatives.
5. Maintain equal opportunity for all athletes to participate and be in Compliance with WIAA Rules of Eligibility.
6. Make the Combine as affordable as possible for all to attend.
Combine Format
Game Like Exposure Format:
The Combine will provide the players selected two game like environments
to showcase their playing skills. These game situations and structure
will be played on fields adjacent to one another allowing all scouts
and coaches the opportunity to see everyone play. Umpires will be
provided during these scrimmages.
Skill Evaluation:
Players will be tested in their primary position and on the mound
if they are a pitcher. Skill testing will take place on the diamond
during pre-game infield. The first day will have a mandatory format
to include the following:
Outfielders will all throw from deep right field (no cut off man) and take two throws to second base and one throw to third base during their first round. During the second round each outfielder throw two balls to home. Each player receives a total of five throws.
Infielders will all throw from shortstop (excluding 1st baseman). Each player will throw three balls the first round and rotate. Each player will throw two balls during the second round for a total of five throws.
Catchers will each throw five balls to second base (glove to glove timing) throwing three balls the first round and two the second round.
Pitchers will be evaluated during game competition. Each team will have approximately seven pitchers. Every pitcher will throw one inning during their team’s first game (a couple may throw two). All pitchers will have the opportunity to throw again during their second game.
60 Yard Dash - All players will be timed in the 60 yard dash during the first day of the combine.
Pro Scout & Collegiate Coach Representation
Showtime Sports has worked with over 75 different collegiate coaches and professional scouts during the last 10 years. Last year we had over 40 coaches & scouts in attendance. We will invite these organizations and schools again along with many others. Showtime Sports can not guarantee attendance by any scout or collegiate coach. Our goal is the get as many collegiate coaches and professional scouts to attend the event as possible. Currently, the Illinois tournament held at Stevenson High School draws approximately 100 coaches and scouts per year. We are again collaborating with the director of that tournament to expand our contacts and hope to continue drawing a good representation from the Midwest.
Player Tryout and Selection Process
All players in the junior class are eligible to participate in the tryout process. If a player does not tryout, they will not be allowed to participate in Wisconsin High School Baseball Combine.
Six tryouts will be scheduled throughout the state for players to attend. Our goal is to find quality facilities that are within approximately 90 miles of every community. Players will be evaluated and tested in various aspects of the game to include speed, agility, arm strength, and hitting. Showtime Sports staff will utilize a systematic format to rate and evaluate players to assist in determining player selection.
Tabulated results from the tryouts will determine the top 144 players who will represent our state at the Combine. Showtime Sports will be contacting the selected players with combine information and registration details.
If a player within the top 144 players declines the opportunity to participate, our staff will then notify the next best qualified player based on the tryout results. Example: Player #145 will have the first right of refusal to participate.
Player Notification Process
A list of selected players will be posted on the web site. All players who attended a tryout may check the web site by a designated date which will be determined at the tryouts.
All selected players will receive an email or mailed document detailing the combine and a registration form from Showtime Sports.
Combine Coaches
Showtime Sports will select high school coaches to work the combine. We believe it is important for high school coaches be involved with the event and believe that it will solidify the relationship between the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association and Showtime Sports.
